The aircraft was also the first mass-produced "flying fortress." The most popular member of this series is the B-17F, which left the factory on July 15, 1942, and entered active service with the 324th Squadron based in England. The crew called it Memphis Belle, after the girlfriend of its pilot, Lieutenant Robert K. Morgan. The aircraft became famous because it was officially recognized as the first American Air Force bomber to survive 25 missions over Europe, later becoming the star of a propaganda film made in Hollywood. After this mission, Memphis Belle and its crew returned to the USA. Later, it was purchased by the city of Memphis and used as a memorial. By the end of the war, 12,677 B-17s had been produced.
